Chapter Eleven

So Much Death

One of these days, my overdeveloped sense of momness is going to get me in trouble.

I’m hoping it’s not today. Here we are in Quentin’s world and I’m already committed to finding a missing college student as well as Damon Michaels. It’s not like my psyche needed any more motivation, but of course there had to be a child involved, so now I’m on edge and rushing. Same thing happens to me when I read books. If a kid ends up in mortal peril, I start skimming to hurry up and get to the part where they aren’t in danger anymore. Movies in theaters are a bit harder to skim.

The fact that the majority of the fanbase fully expected little Queen Thae to be killed off within the first three chapters of his next (currently unpublished) book raises my anxiety level all the more.

Hey, maybe because everyone expected it, he wouldn’t do it.

Then again, he’s not in control at the moment, so who the hell knows what’s going on.

I stepped around a tree and undressed. Seconds later, something very much not me emerged out of the forest. I’m not sure what they were expecting, but me transforming into Talos probably wasn’t it. Lindsey came close to fainting. Thae not so much. Crazily, seeing Talos didn’t seem to bother the young royal too much. At least, she handled it far better than I expected a nine-year-old would.

Granted, this kid is from a world where dragons are a known-of quantity. Kind of like French people. Most Americans know they exist even though they’ve never seen one. Same for dragons here. Kinda doubt the usual reaction to a French person would be fainting. Then again, they are notorious for not bathing. So...

Lindsey quickly got over the sight of Talos. I suppose having the army of an entire kingdom chasing her with intent to kill did wonders for her ability to accept the strange. Then again, she’s evidently using magic, so she’s not firmly rooted in the ‘real’ world. Maybe she thinks I’ve tapped into some mystical quality of this place to shapeshift. Little does she know, it works back home, too.

Everyone climbs on my back. There are no Momvans in this world, so I’ve become the Mom-van. Literally. I’m a mom, and I’m the vehicle, though the Sienna has more cargo space than Talos… and I’m betting the seating is more comfortable in the Toyota as well.

Thae’s curled up between Tammy and Lindsey, eyes closed and clinging for her life. Poor thing is terrified of heights. As a royal’s daughter, she’s led a highly sheltered existence. Not sure if that’s why she’s afraid of pretty much everything. If you can think of something kids might be scared of: the dark, loud noises, bugs, snakes, closet monsters, heights, or whatever… this kid is afraid of it.

She’s also on the shy side and has trouble speaking in a voice much louder than whispering.

As my daughter said, she’s totally not cut out to be a monarch.
